How to Choose a Wedding DJ: 10 Essential Tips
Last updated: 1 July 2026
Choosing the right wedding DJ is one of the most important decisions in your wedding planning journey. The DJ sets the tone for your entire evening reception — they control the music, the energy, the key moments, and ultimately whether your guests have an unforgettable time or a forgettable one. Here are 10 essential tips, from 25 years of experience, to help you choose the right wedding DJ.
1. Check Experience and Track Record
Experience is the single most important factor in wedding DJ quality. A DJ who has performed at hundreds of weddings has seen every type of crowd, every venue layout and every possible situation. They can read a room, adapt to the energy, and handle any issue without it affecting the evening.
What to look for:
- Number of weddings performed (look for 500+)
- Years of experience (look for 10+)
- Genuine reviews and testimonials from real couples
- Examples of venues they have performed at
I have performed at over 1000 events over 25+ years. That depth of experience means fewer things go wrong and the dancefloor stays full.
2. Verify They Carry Backup Equipment
This is non-negotiable. Equipment failure at a wedding is catastrophic — there is no second chance. A professional DJ carries full backup at every event: backup laptop, backup mixer, backup speakers, backup cables. If a DJ does not carry backup, they are an amateur.
What to ask: "Do you carry full backup equipment to every wedding?"
In 25 years and 1000+ events, my backup equipment has never needed to be used — but it is always there. That is the point of backup: you hope you never need it, but if you do, the show goes on.
3. Confirm Public Liability Insurance
Most quality wedding venues — including Keele Hall, Crewe Hall, Trentham Estate and virtually every licensed wedding venue in Staffordshire and Cheshire — require DJs to carry Public Liability Insurance (PLI). If your DJ does not have PLI, your venue may not allow them to perform.
What to ask: "Do you carry Public Liability Insurance? Can you provide a certificate to our venue?"
I carry full PLI and can provide a certificate to any venue on request.
4. Look for Venue-Specific Experience
Every venue has different acoustics, layout, power supply and licensing hours. A DJ who has performed at your venue before knows the best setup position, the right volume levels, and how to time the evening for that specific space. This venue-specific experience is invaluable.
What to ask: "Have you performed at our venue before?"
I have performed at nearly every wedding venue in Staffordshire and Cheshire. If I have not performed at your specific venue, I will visit in advance or coordinate with the venue team to understand the setup requirements.
5. Check for Online Planning Tools
A professional wedding DJ provides more than just a phone call — they provide a structured planning system. Look for a DJ who offers:
- An online music planning portal
- A guest song request system
- The ability to specify your first dance, must-play songs and do-not-play list
- Clear communication in the lead-up to the wedding
What to ask: "Do you provide an online planning portal for music and requests?"
I provide a full online planning portal for every couple, including a guest request system that your guests can use before the wedding.
6. Review Their Equipment Quality
The quality of a DJ's sound and lighting equipment directly affects the atmosphere of your wedding. Professional-grade equipment produces clear, warm sound that fills the room without being harsh, and lighting that transforms the venue.
What to look for:
- Professional-grade sound system (not consumer or budget equipment)
- Full lighting rig included in the package
- Uplighting available as an add-on or part of a premium package
- A professional booth facade that looks smart
7. Assess Their Music Knowledge and Flexibility
A great wedding DJ knows music across all eras and genres, and can adapt to any crowd. They should be able to discuss your music preferences knowledgeably, offer suggestions, and demonstrate an understanding of how to build a dancefloor throughout the evening.
What to ask: "How do you handle different music preferences and age groups?"
The key is a DJ who can blend your personal playlist with their expertise — playing the songs you want while using their experience to fill the gaps and read the crowd.
8. Confirm What Is Included
Understand exactly what is included in your DJ package. Key questions:
- Is dancefloor lighting included?
- Are wireless microphones for speeches included?
- Is ceremony music included (for all-day packages)?
- Is MC service included?
- Is setup and breakdown included?
- Are there any hidden charges (travel, late finish, etc.)?
A professional DJ is transparent about pricing and inclusions. There should be no surprises on the invoice.
9. Meet or Speak Before Booking
You should feel comfortable with your DJ. They are a key part of your wedding day, and their personality affects the atmosphere of the evening. Speak to them on the phone, meet in person if possible, and ensure they understand your vision.
Red flags:
- They are hard to reach before booking
- They seem disinterested in your preferences
- They are unwilling to discuss details
- They pressure you to book immediately
10. Trust Your Instincts on Price
Price is a factor for every couple, but be wary of unusually low quotes. A quality wedding DJ with professional equipment, backup, insurance and experience costs a fair price. A DJ offering significantly less than the market rate is cutting corners somewhere — equipment, backup, insurance, or experience.
The question to ask is not 'what is the cheapest DJ?' but 'what value does this DJ provide?' A DJ who costs £200 more but has 25 years of experience, full backup, PLI, venue-specific knowledge and an online planning portal is better value than a cheaper DJ who lacks these essentials.
